This week A level Politics students were fortunate to receive a visit from the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Khan.
He spoke to students about the underlying principles of the CPA – what unites these very diverse 52 countries of which the Isle of Man is one.
Lucy Pickles, Mr Khan’s assistant private secretary, spoke about the challenges of getting more women into parliaments in these jurisdictions, where many traditional values still prevail with regards to women’s positions in public life.
We were also joined by Mr Peake MHK and Ms Bettison MHK, who spoke about their role as an MHK and the challenges for government. Students were able to ask questions of all of the speakers and this lead to some interesting discussions on getting more young people interested and involved with politics and also the pros and cons of using social media to spread political knowledge and increase participation.
