Today, Sixth Form students had the chance to meet and debate with Dr Helen Pankhurst, great grand-daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and grand-daughter of Sylvia Pankhurst.
Dr Pankhurst led an interesting debate amongst the students on a number of issues, including the role of women in the developing world, which reflects the current role of Dr Pankhurst as a senior adviser for Care International, women in Manx Politics, feminism in the 21st century and, of course, the right to vote for women across the world.
Also in attendance were the Friends of Sophie Goulden, an organisation who are campaigning to have the Manx woman Sophie Goulden’s role in the suffragette movement (as an active campaigner and also mother to Emmeline Pankhurst) recognised and celebrated on the Isle of Man.
