Junior Tynwald
Team SNHS did a fantastic job representing the school in the annual Junior Tynwald. This year we tabled questions on the success of allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote (Rhiannon Mellor), reforming abortion law in the island to match that of the UK (David Clague) and whether the island’s secondary schools give enough provision for Manx culture and language. Such was the extensive supplementary questions that only 7/15 questions tabled this year were answered in the chamber! Our students did a fantastic job asking some well thought out and probing supplementary questions.
We were also one of the schools who led one of the two debates this year. Well done to Amber Young who made an excellent case for compulsory organ donor scheme, with an opt-out system to be introduced on the island as has already happened in Wales.
The president of Tynwald was suitably impressed with the caliber of the questions from all 5 secondary schools on the island and the students’ enthusiasm and engagement in politics.
